Lahemaa is Estonia's oldest and largest national park. It was established in 1971 to preserve, study and promote the natural environment and cultural heritage characteristic of Northern Estonia. The park currently covers 72,500 ha, of which a third is maritime. Most people associate Lahemaa with the Palmse, Sagadi and Vihula manors, the captains' village of Käsmu, the fishermen's village of Altja or the beautiful beach at Võsu. It is also known for its natural sights and cultural landscape. In order to make it easier for people to get around and get to know the national park, there are both hiking and study trails.
