When you visit Kärkna Village, you can go and see the ruins of the Kärkna Convent (1234) that was one of the biggest centres of Cistercian monks in Livonia. The convent was located in the delta of the Amme River, 0.5 km from the Emajõgi River (in the current Lammiku Village) and protected the waterway of the Emajõgi River and the town of Tartu. The convent was established by the first Bishop of Tart Herman I. Only the ruins of the foundation and the watermill of the formerly powerful convent have been preserved. The yard around the formerly gloomy convent has become a party venue for local people.
