Lake Suurjärv - Big Lake, or as the locals call it, 'Witch's Lake' - forms part of a chain of lakes in Rõuge valley. The lake formed at the end of the last ice age due to the eroding action of melting ice.
It is 13.5 hectares in area with an average depth of 11.9 metres and it is an open system, with creeks flowing into it from Lakes Liinjärv, Valgjärv and Kaussjärv. It is the deepest lake in Estonia (38 metres). There is a well-maintained public beach by the lake. A hiking trail runs along the shoreline.
Rõuge Suurjärv is one of the 21 places in Southern Estonia worth discovering which are marked by a yellow National Geographic window; if you love nature, a visit is highly recommended.

Lake Suurjärv is in the heart of Rõuge and one of the five lakes in the town. It is 16 km from Võru and just 50 metres on the right from the Rõuge bus stop in the direction of Haanja.
