The Night Battle of Tehumardi took place in the late hours of 8 October 1944, and it was one of Saaremaa's bloodiest battles during World War II. The battle was fought between Soviet troops making their way towards Sõrve peninsula and a German convoy retreating from Kuressaare.
The bloody battle turned into hand-to-hand combat; both sides suffered heavy losses.

Good to know: In memory of the dead, a monument was erected – it has the shape of a sword with depictions of male faces.

Standard Soviet War Memorial

The battle was significant. The memorial itself is ok - seemed like a pretty standard Soviet WW2 memorial. Worth a stop if you’re driving by.
