The most valuable features of the 2770 ha Nigula Nature Conservation Area are Nigula Fen, a lake called Järv and old forests. The Nigula Forest, untouched by human activity, is unique even on the scale of Europe.
Nigula Fen is the first fen that was taken under protection in Estonia, in 1957. It is steep and bare – the surface of the fen rises up to 3 m in its western part. The five fen islands covered in ancient forests are the most impressive features of Nigula Fen.
Useful information:
Many large cranberries grow in the fen and a cranberry is also depicted on the emblem of Nigula. There is a rehabilitation centre for wild animals in the nature conservation area.
