Sculpture ‘Leelotaja’

Carl Robert Jakobsoni tänav-42A, Viljandi

View on map

There is a memorial sign in front of the small building of Viljandi City Centre School, which marks the location of the first song festival of Viljandi County and the place where the Farmers’ Society and the Koit Society were founded.
The author and designer of the sign is Viljandi County artist Aate-Heli Õun. The stone she designed complements the bronze replica of the ‘Leelotaja’ statue created by sculptor Lydia Laas from Viljandi County in the 1950s. The original sculpture is located in Kumu depository in Tallinn.
The model of the piece is thought to be the actress Laine Mesikäpp, who has performed at many Estonian song festivals and folk art festivals.
