Sirtsi swamp

Sirtsi swamp is located in Sirtsi Nature Preserve that is located in Maidla Rural Municipality on the border of Ida-Viru and Lääne-Viru Counties.

The large bog with a huge clean water supply is a good habitat for cranberries, as well as golden eagle, spotted eagle, capercaillie and black grouse. When walking in the vicinity of Sirtsi swamp, you can spot bear, wolf and lynx tracks; flying squirrels, which are under protection and rarely seen, live in the woods around the swamp.

Good to know:
- Sirtsi is one of the largest Viru County swamps with its 50 km2 area;
- during past centuries, before the railway was built, an important winter road led across Sirtsi swamp, the so-called Viru Road, which was used for travelling from Central Estonia to Narva and St. Petersburg.
