Sweden has played significant part in Estonian history since the Viking era. A number of Estonian islands have been strongly influenced by Swedish culture. Likewise, Noarootsi and Pivarootsi owe their names toSweden. (“Rootsi“ is Estonian for “Sweden”).

Life under the Swedish rulers (1629-1710) is known as “Good old Swedish era”. Swedish King Gustav II Adolf established the University of Tartu in 1632 and another king - Karl XII stayed in Estonia (1700-1710) during the Great Northern War (1700-1721). Even nowadays wherever you go in Estonia, you’ll likely find a legend connected to Karl XII.

Get to know Haapsalu, the hometown of Swedish artist Ilon Wikland who is known for her illustrations of Astrid Lindgren’s books. Walk in her childhood town, visit her museum  and get to know the real Castle from the book  “Robber’s daughter Ronja“.
