For sailing enthusiasts, there’s a wide variety of yachts and crew to choose from who will happily organise trips of different lengths for you to different parts of Estonia. Seasoned sailors can also rent their own yachts and set off on their own voyages of discovery.
The best places to go sailing in Estonia
An ideal option for a short trip is to spend a few hours sailing around Tallinn Bay, allowing you to make stops at any events along the way and to combine your trip with a visit to the Maritime Museum at the Seaplane Harbour.
You can also set out from Tallinn to the nearby islands of Aegna, Naissaar and Prangli. From Pärnu most boats head for the islands of Kihnu and Ruhnu, while from Haapsalu you can make for Hiiumaa and Vormsi and from Saaremaa for Abruka.
Once you’ve had your fill of Estonia’s islands and coastline, why not try sailing on some of its lakes? Võrtsjärv and Peipsi have plenty of places you can enjoy a swim and a picnic in lovely bays and on lake islands, while Saadjärv is the perfect place to try more competitive sailing.
You can make your sailing holiday even more exciting by taking to the sea (or a lake) in an historical wooden boat.
Make the most of winter and try your hand at ice sailing, in which skates are attached to the bottoms of yachts. You can go ice sailing on lakes and on the bays in Haapsalu and Pärnu.
What you need to know about sailing in Estonia
All sea-lovers and their families are welcome at the Tallinn Maritime Days and Saaremaa Maritime Week festivals each summer, while more serious sailors can take part in (or simply cheer on) the annual Muhu Offshore Sailing Championships – the oldest competition of its kind in the country.
The weather at sea is often changeable. The availability of safety equipment is ensured by service providers, but you should make sure you take warm, weatherproof clothing with you, as well as sunglasses, sun cream and something for your head.
Sailing is a great way of spending a holiday with family or friends, but is also a fantastic way to mark special occasions and for company events and team training.
