Estonia’s Natural Wonders
Estonia has many natural wonders but a few seem to be visited more than others and they are:
- Kaali is a small group of meteorite craters on Saaremaa Island. The largest crater is over 110 metres wide and contains a small lake known as Lake Kaali.
- The waterfall in Jägala is 8 metres high and cascades over a small limestone “cliff”. The water has smoothed the limestone edge over centuries and created a deep splash pool and 300 metres long valley.
- Near Kohtla-Järve and Jõhvi at on the north coast, Valaste Waterfall, at 30.5 metres, is the highest in Estonia. It’s most beautiful in winter when the water freezes and creates a fairy tale style frozen sculpture.
- Tuhala Witches' Well in North Estonia is in reality a karst spring that overflows during the spring floods. It happens when the underground Tuhala River produce more water flow than it can manage. The well itself is only 2.5 metres deep, but under pressure it can spurt water up to half a metre.
