The most valuable features of the landscape protection area are its diverse terrain, the sand outcrop of the valley of the Elva River and the flooded meadows. The landscape protection area was created in 1992 to protect the landscapes surrounding the Elva River and the lean waters of Laguja, Illi, Varesepalu and Ilus springs, to preserve the completeness of the landscapes in the area’s valleys and to protect endangered habitats and species. The hiking tracks of the Elva-Vitipalu Landscape Protection Area start in front of the Tartu County Recreational Sports Centre near Elva. A scheme of the tracks is also available there.
