The Granö Centre of the University of Tartu and Turku University in Tartu was opened in April 2000. It is situated in a house designed by Alvar Aalto for the family of Professor August Tammekann in 1932. The Turku University Foundation bought the property from Tammekann's children in 1998, renovating it so as to match Aalto's original designs as closely as possible.
J. G. Granö's son, the academic Olavi Granö, was one of the men behind the Turku University and University of Tartu centre for cooperation.
