Lubok yard – a workshop introducing the Old Believers’ popular print

When exploring the unique villages of the Old Believers, it is worth getting acquainted with lubok. It is a form of Russian folk art that began in the 16th century. A lubok is a hand-painted print that has explanatory texts printed on it with a woodcut block.
The Estonian artist Pavel Varunin started making lubki for Old Believers in the late 1990s. The Lubok yard was born out of the initiative of P. Varunin to introduce Old Believers' printing art and its history to both children and adults.
In the yard, there is a wooden printing press made by Pavel Varunin, which imitates 15th-century printing press machines. In addition, there are exhibitions and workshops.
