Ballet ’Keres’

The ballet focuses on Paul Keres, the great Estonian chess player, who has a dignified position on the world’s chess arena and who has even been a national hero, but has also shouldered the tragedy of the republic and its people. As an active chess player, he had to experience losing his republic, an unsuccessful emigration, the endless suspicions of the Soviet power, and the resistance of the system in aiming to become a world champion.

Two ideal words meet in the production: chess as the ideal of games and thinking, and ballet as the supreme form of the marvellous combination of music and dance. Both worlds have something superbly clear and pure.

MUSIC
The composition of the music is based on chess, its rhythm and tempo as an academic sports game, the gracefulness of chess pieces, the minimalism of black and white, the endless contrast and tension, but also the way the conflict-free nature of Keres ended up in the midst of turbulent events of the political world. We will also find an inspiring parallelism in the way music and chess is perceived in time: real time vs. perceived time.

MUSICIANS IN A BOX
Architect Ülar Mark designed six boxes for the six musicians on stage – six instruments, six chess pieces. The boxes are constricting and when people live in a box-like country, their next steps are always known. For sounds, boxes are a way to bring out each curve of the bow or the airwaves individually, bringing out their micro-nuances and creating new syntheses and combinations.
