The first home game of the Estonian men's soccer team will be held on 30 May at 7 p.m. at the Rakvere city stadium: the first game of the Baltic tournament will be held against Lithuania. This is the first time that the Estonian men's team will play in Rakvere. In 2012, the group stages of the European Championship Final tournament of under-19 teams were held in the centre of Lääne-Viru County. Different youth teams and the women's team have also played there.
Aleksandr Holst, Deputy Chairman of Rakvere City Council and the head of the sports committee, is happy that the city has the opportunity to participate in such an event.
'On the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, it is a great honour that Rakvere gets to host the Estonian national football team as part of the historic Baltic tournament. We are sure that this will be one of the most important events taking place in our city this year and it is extremely positive that Rakvere was chosen as the city to host the game,' said Holst.
According to Aivar Pohlak, president of the Football Association, it is important to take the national games outside of Tallinn.
'First of all, I would like to thank the city of Rakvere for welcoming us. It is important for the association that fans living outside of the capital also get to experience the emotions and other factors accompanying the national games. We have received feedback from fans that they are very interested in watching the games in other cities. Naturally, the location of the game has to have high-quality conditions, which the city of Rakvere and the local stadium offer,' said Pohlak.
The Estonian national football team has played in seven different cities in addition to Tallinn: in Pärnu (1993, 1999, 2016), in Narva (1996), in Viljandi (1997, 1998), in Kuressaare (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008), in Tartu (1997, 2012), in Valga (1998, 2003), and in Kohtla-Järve (1998).
