Jämaja Church

This church is thought to have stood in Jämaja since the 13th century, although nothing remains today of the original building. The church we see today, in Historicist style, was constructed in the second half of the 19th century. What makes it special is its proximity to the sea: the subject of its altar painting could only be found in a church where the sounds of the sea are heard through the window. Jämaja cemetery is located a little away from the church, practically on the beach. It is the only cemetery in Estonia this close to the water's edge.
