The Piusa River Primaeval Valley Landscape Protection Area has been established to protect the Piusa River Primaeval Valley and its Devonian sandstone outcrops. The Piusa River has the highest stream gradient in Estonia and once had many watermills on it. The river is still narrow and shallow in the protected area.
