Memorial to Marie Heiberg in Urvaste church park

Estonian poet Marie Heiberg (1890-1942), a bust of whom adorns this church manor, was born on the former Siimu Farm close to Lake Uhtjärv. A child of a poor family, she studied at local schools in Urvaste and Sangaste before turning her attention to poetry. Her early works immediately brought her to people's attention.

Sadly, almost 20 years of Heiberg's life - one for whose angst and anguish she was well-known - were spent in an institution in Tallinn. She died in 1942 and was buried in Liiva cemetery.
