Mäe-Lõhtsuu oak tree in Urvaste
People are becoming more and more interested in the trees of Estonia and tree tourism is becoming more and more popular.
In terms of breadth, the Mäe-Lõhtsuu or Lõhtsu-Reinu oak tree is the second biggest in Estonia. It grows to the west of Urvaste church, next to the Mäe-Lõhtsuu mill on a steep incline close to the ruins of Lõhtsu Farm. Its girth is 7.03 metres and height 28 metres.
People say that the tree is almost 300 years old, although researchers reckon it must be older (at least 400).
Good to know: years ago, when the area around the tree was still covered in scrub, the hollow trunk of the tree was home to a bear enjoying its winter slumber.
