Lõmala-Kaugatoma Heritage Trail
The gravel road between Lõmala and Kaugatoma is part of the coastal road that connects the northern and western coast of Saaremaa with the Sõrve Peninsula. The appearance of the road takes travelers back to the 1950s-1970s. The narrow and winding gravel surface, concrete kilometer posts, and signposts from that era have been preserved.
Today, this road section is deliberately marked and preserved as a gravel road characteristic of mid-20th-century Estonia. The 50 km/h speed limit invites drivers to slow down, notice roadside details, and enjoy the surrounding nature. On the road, one may encounter old milk platforms, wartime tank barriers, and snow gates – silent witnesses to the history here.
The Lõmala–Kaugatoma road section is also significant in the story of the Saaremaa rally, having been one of the most popular speed tests for years.
This road is not merely for movement but for a journey through time, where the history and nature of Saaremaa meet in the calm, balanced rhythm characteristic of the UNESCO West Estonian islands biosphere area.
