Long House of the Hiiumaa Museum

Vabrikuväljak 8, Kärdla linn, Hiiumaa vald, Hiiu maakond

REQUEST INFORMATION View on map

The main house of the Hiiumaa Museum has been located in the old directors' residence of the former Kärdla Broadcloth Factory, popularly known as the Long House, since 1998. The house was constructed in the 1830s and 40s; the 60 m long house is one of the longest wooden houses in the small town of Kärdla.

The museum features a permanent exhibition "In childhood...", which focuses mainly on small children, but its stories sometimes take a detour to older ages. Stories and items of the Hiiumaa Museum collections have been used.

In the museum galleries you can also see smaller exhibitions that are changed from time to time. We have a souvenir and book shop open with a wide selection of Hiiumaa handicrafts.

Ok little museum about Hiiumaa life

Some interesting exhibits about Hiiumaa life but only a few exhibits had English subtitles meaning there wasn't too much for us tourists. I liked the details they had, interesting take on the manor...

Piece of history

Museum is educative and well spent time. I am wondering, if museum can be expanded and some more exhibitions could be shown to customers to prolong good time in the middle of history.

Kärdla's past

You'd hardly imagine that Kärdla had an industrial past. You are updated on the history of the family of the von Ungern-Sternbergs and what they promoted in Kärdla.
