Masha Ivashintsova photo exhibition „Chiaroscuro”

The
photo exhibition of the work of St. Petersburg photographer and poet Masha
Ivashintsova (1942-2000) is open at the Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre in Tallinn. The exhibition ‘Chiaroscuro’ is the first large-scale retrospective of the photographer to take place anywhere in the world. There will be eighty black-and-white photos on display, and Masha’s poems will be shown to the public for the first time (translated into Estonian by Doris Kareva and into English by Matthew Hyde).
In 2017 Masha Ivashintsova’s daughter discovered nearly 30,000 photos and
negatives - taken between 1969 and 1999 - in an attic in St. Petersburg, and
Masha’s story spread across the world. The leading global art website
Artnet described the discovery of her archive as one of the most important
art events of 2018, since few photographers have brought us a similar unofficial
and lyrical view of life inside the Soviet Union. Masha was on the streets
and in the backrooms of Leningrad at a time of creative and political
ferment, observing through her lens characters who were otherwise unnoticed and unremarkable, as well as the underground cultural elite of Leningrad at
the time. With her photographs, Masha takes us on a journey into the
everyday lives of the Soviet people, lives which were full of love, sadness,
absurdity, conflict and laughter.
