Complete the marathon challenge during a visit to Estonia

As October’s much anticipated London Marathon 2021 draws closer, those who don’t have a place may be inspired to take up an alternative challenge. Estonia offers a variety of marathon events to participate in. From a month-long virtual marathon to a night run or one of the largest mountain bike marathons in the world, Estonia has a variety of sporting events to rival those in the UK.

Tallinn Marathon

Located in Estonia’s capital, the Tallinn Marathon takes place from 10th-12th September. It is the largest international running event in Estonia and offers the option to run 5k, 10k or a half-marathon as well as the full distance, making it a great choice for runners of all abilities. The Tallinn Marathon gives the opportunity to complete the race in the beautiful surroundings of the UNESCO-declared Old Town, considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.

Virtual Marathon

For those looking for a run to complete on home soil, Estonia also offers a virtual option. Taking place during September, the Tallinn Virtual Marathon can be completed from anywhere in the world. The distances available are the same as the in-person event but also includes the option to run a “marathon combo”. This allows runners to complete the distance in smaller, more manageable bursts with a mix of running or walking, so is perfect for those trying to fit in the full distance, and necessary training, around a busy schedule. On completion, all participants of the virtual marathon will receive an electronic certificate and a unique medal corresponding to their distance.

Registration for the Virtual Marathon closes on 15th September. Find out more at:

Tartu City Marathon

Away from the capital, the Tartu City Marathon takes place on 2nd October. Estonia’s second city and prominent university town is a beautiful setting for the marathon. The course is a lap around the centre of Tartu, allowing the runners to enjoy the city’s architecture during the race. There are options for shorter routes – a 10km open to runners and Nordic walkers, and a half-marathon, as well as a short 4-km night run taking place the evening before in darkness.

Tartu Mountain Biking Marathon

For those who would rather attempt the distance on two wheels, the Tartu Mountain Bike Marathon on 19th September is highly recommended. Take inspiration from Team GB’s gold-winning Tom by attempting the third largest mountain biking marathon in the world. The event is open to all, and thousands of cyclists take part in the marathon. Taking place from Otepää to Elva, the longest track available spans 89km. The course is a great opportunity to bring teams together after a disconnected year, all whilst exploring the beautiful countryside of Estonia. For those looking for a group challenge, the team marathon runs the week before (12th September).
