Põhjakonna Stairs

PAEKALDA, Lubja küla, Viimsi vald, Harju maakond

View on map

Lubja limestone shore terrace, which is located near Tallinn, is the oldest and highest place in Viimsi, and it emerged from the water about 11,500 years ago. During the Soviet era in the 1970s, the terrace was separated with barbed wire because the authorities kept fuel tanks there. The idea to build a staircase connecting the villages of Haabneeme and Lubja – which was unthinkable during the occupation – has now become reality.

The stairs, constructed at a height of 50 meters on the limestone shore terrace, has lights which are turned on during dark hours and offers an incredible view.

The barrier is only built to one side of the stairs which runs in a zigzag pattern along a steep hill. The other side hides the natural slope of the hill.
