Who does not know the famous composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – the author of three ballets, ten operas and seven symphonies? Who would not like to peek into his soul and discover how the great composer created these masterpieces? What did he feel and experience? How the heroes of his works were born – the Mouse King, the wicked magician Rothbart or the Queen of Spades? The greatest contemporary director Boris Eifman lifts the veil from the secrets of life, relationship with women and the creative process of the composer in his new ballet “Tchaikovsky. Pro et Contra”.

The story of the ballet begins in 1993 when its predecessor, "Tchaikovsky" ballet, was released. That production experienced unprecedented success all over the world. With time, technical capabilities of theaters took a step forward and thus Eifman’s production has been radically updated and received the new name “Tchaikovsky. Pro et Contra”.

The choreographic narration of the new production, harmonious with the composer’s music in an emotionally-dramaturgical terms, shows variety and accurately conveys emotional experience of the characters. The ingenuity of the choreographic language allowed Boris Eifman to explore insightfully the internal conflict, from which Tchaikovsky suffered painfully and which became a source of unbearable mental suffering and predestined the tragic confessional tone of his music.

The basis of the narrative canvas of the ballet is memories of the dying composer filled with phantasmagoria. The whole life is flashing before the eyes of exhausted Tchaikovsky as a delirious near-death experience. Elaborating on the principle of the diversity of characters, their fragmentation into a gallery of images, Eifman expressly complicates the construction of the performance and the structure of the characters. Allusions to the composer's great works – the ballets The Nutcracker and Swan Lake – are aligned with fantasies on Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades opera themes. The mystery of birth of imperishable masterpieces, appearing as if in defiance of the world of everyday life, with its vanity, is in the main focus of the choreographer-thinker and it becomes a key philosophical problem of the performance.

Where lies the dividing line between commonplace trivialities and the artist's creative work? In his destiny these two components are intertwined. Joy and suffering, victory and defeat, the heights of ratio and storms of passion – all is to be laid upon the altar of great achievements in art. This is the destiny of any artist; he is constantly surrounded by both enthusiastic admirers and detractors. Tchaikovsky’s life is a non-stop dialogue with himself; his music is a confession.
