The Red Tower

Hommiku tänav 11, Pärnu linn, Pärnu

View on map

The Red Tower is a part of the medieval fortress of Pärnu, a prison tower built in the Southeastern corner of the city wall in the 15th century. It is the only defensive tower of the Hanseatic town of New-Pärnu that has been preserved. This granite tower got its name from the brick that used to line the inside and outside of the tower. In the 17th century, the tower had four storeys and a prison cell that was 6 metres deep. Three storeys have been preserved.

In the 19th century, the building was renovated into the town archives, but the building served a number of different purposes over the following century.

Affiliate of the Pärnu Museum is open in the Red tower, complementing the main exhibition of the museum with a modern panorama cinema and introducing the medieval town.

Features and amenities

Getting there

You can enter the courtyard of the Red Tower through the gate at Hommiku Street. From the open gate you can see the courtyard gallery, step right ahead and on the other end of the courtyard you will see the Red Tower. If the tower already has a group visiting, there will be sign stating that next to the door. Thank you for your patience – as the building is old, a limited number of people is allowed to the tower at a time.

Only medieval structure standing in Parnu

We had time for lunch and seeing one thing. I selected this and I'm glad that I did. A docent did an introduction of the building's significance and use over time and then sent us up to the top for...

Interesting tower

The tower is a part of the town wall. And the only survived part. They show a video about a history of Pärnu and there is a model of the ancient city. Interesting place, a little bit overpriced.

Red tower of Pärnu

Little tower with great history. You can visit the tower and at the top there is good 360° movie about the history of the tower.
