Northern pastime - cross country skiing

Cross country skiing is one of the best ways to appreciate the serenity of Estonian forests while bringing peace to the mind and body. The rolling hills in the south and northeast offer tracks for everyone, from beginners to skiing enthusiasts. You can rent equipment and ski into the night under lit tracks, where you may even meet a wild rabbit, fox or deer. Several large ski races take place throughout the winter, so come spectate or join in!

Pühajärve-Kääriku Ski Track

The 10 km Pühajärve-Kääriku ski track is suitable for both skiers and hikers who want to enjoy the magic of winter. It starts either by the Pühajärve Spa & Holiday Resort or at Kääriku Sportcentre. The 2.5 km Sihva-Kääriku section is lit until 9 pm. The track has a simple relief and is well suited for amateur skiers. In Kääriku, you can continue your skiing hike on the Kääriku ski tracks of different length. You can hire skis in Otepää skirentals. Come and enjoy the magical landscape of Otepää!

Lähte ski trails

Lähte ski trails are located in the small town of Lähte, 15 km from Tartu. Ski trails are accessible 24 hours a day for free. Lähte has four ski trails in varying lengths: 5 km, 2.5 km, 2 km and 1 km. During the winter, the ski trails are lit until 9 pm. You can also use a 1.25 km trail with artificial snow. Next to the trails, you find a watch tower. Showers are available in Lähte sports hall nearby.

Health and ski trails in Palermo, Rakvere

When winter comes, ski trails await you in the health trails in the Palermo forests, in Rakvere. You can ski on the 3 km cross-country track, of which 2.2 km is lighted. If you do not have your own skis, you can rent them from the sports shop RixRatas in the centre of Rakvere, Parkali Street 7. In the summer, health trails in Palermo are open for everyone for Nordic walking, running or biking. You will find more information about the Palermo health trail here. Useful information: Palermo has been popular amongst skiers from the 1930s.  

Tartu Marathon Ski Track

Valga maakond, Otepää linn

The 63 km track of the Tartu Ski Marathon starts from the stadium of Tehvandi Sport Centre in Otepää and runs to Elva through Väike Munamägi, Matu, Harimägi, Kuutsemägi and Palu. The 31 km track starts by the Arula crossroads. The official finish of the track is in the Tartu County Recreational Sport Centre in Elva. The track section between Tehvandi and Kääriku can be used from the second week of February until the end of the winter season. Interesting facts: * the wooden sculptures of the biggest open air theme park in Estonia, Maajumalate Park, are near the track.
