Northern pastime - cross country skiing

Cross country skiing is one of the best ways to appreciate the serenity of Estonian nature while treating your mind and body to a truly uplifting experience. The rolling hills in the south and northeast offer tracks for everyone, from beginners to skiing enthusiasts. You can rent equipment and ski into the night under lit tracks and can even meet wild rabbits, fox or deer. Several large ski races take place throughout the winter, so come and join as a spectator or as a competitor yourself!

Haanja Recreation and Sports Centre

Võru maakond, Haanja küla

The skiing slopes and cross-country skiing tracks in Haanja are suitable for beginners and experienced skiers alike. The skiing tracks are 1 km, 2 km, 3 km and 5 km long. By the stadium there is also a sledding slope which kids and adults will love. Lit skiing tracks run for 2 km and 3.2 km and are open until 21:00. Next to the recreation centre is a shooting range for biathlon lovers. The centre also rents skis, has changing facilities and a sauna, and the Finiš Pub for those looking to recharge their batteries. Outside of the skiing season the tracks in Haanja are ideal for cycling and hiking.

Tehvandi Ski Training Track

The 5 km ski track of Tehvandi Sports Centre is covered with artificial snow and invites you to ski classic style or freestyle. The relief of the track is difficult with some dangerous downhill parts and it is therefore more suitable for professionals. The track is lit until 10:00 pm every evening. The 10 km Tehvandi hiking track is more suitable for amateurs.

Lähte ski trails

Tartu maakond, Lähte alevik

Lähte ski trails are located in the small town of Lähte, 15 km from Tartu. Ski trails are accessible 24 hours a day for free. Lähte has four ski trails in varying lengths: 5 km, 2.5 km, 2 km and 1 km. During the winter, the ski trails are lit until 9 pm. You can also use a 1.25 km trail with artificial snow. Next to the trails, you find a watch tower. Showers are available in Lähte sports hall nearby.

Tartu Marathon Ski Track

The 63 km track of the Tartu Ski Marathon starts from the stadium of Tehvandi Sport Centre in Otepää and runs to Elva through Väike Munamägi, Matu, Harimägi, Kuutsemägi and Palu. The 31 km track starts by the Arula crossroads. The official finish of the track is in the Tartu County Recreational Sport Centre in Elva. The track section between Tehvandi and Kääriku can be used from the second week of February until the end of the winter season. Interesting facts: * the wooden sculptures of the biggest open air theme park in Estonia, Maajumalate Park, are near the track.

Pühajärve-Kääriku Ski Track

The 10 km Pühajärve-Kääriku ski track is suitable for skiers and hikers who want to enjoy the magic of winter. It starts either by the Pühajärve Spa & Holiday Resort or at Kääriku Sport Centre. The 2.5 km Sihva-Kääriku section is lit until 9 pm. The track has a simple relief and is well-suited for amateur skiers. In Kääriku, you can continue your skiing hike on the Kääriku ski tracks of different lengths. You can hire skis in Otepää ski rentals. Come and enjoy the magical landscape of Otepää!

Alutaguse health and sports centre

Ida-Viru maakond, Vasavere küla

The Alutaguse health and sports centre is situated close to Pannjärve in the Kurtna lakelands. The surrounding forests have trails measuring 1, 2, 3, 5, 7.5 and 20 km. In winter you can ski (both freestyle and classic) on lit tracks measuring 2 and 3 km. There is also a sledding slope and climbing track for children. The ski lodge has changing rooms and shower facilities. In summer you can cycle, run or go Nordic walking on the same tracks. Also located nearby is the Pannjärve tubing park, which is unique in Estonia – you can go tubing there all year round.

Ebavere Sports Centre running and ski tracks

Ski tracks and a sledding slope are created on Ebavere hill in the winter season. Ebavere Sports Centre is the starting point of skiing tracks measuring 1, 2, 3, and 5 km in length. The 3 km track is lit until 9 p.m. There is a sledding slope for children at the centre. Ski equipment is available for hire, and ski maintenance services are available. Use of the tracks is free, but you must pay for ski hire and maintenance. The tracks are also open in summer: you can go running, riding, or Nordic walking on them. There is a track for roller skating and roller skiing nearby. Sports equipment is available for hire. There are bathroom facilities and a sauna, as well as a seminar room.

Viljandi County Sports and Recreation Centre ski tracks

Viljandi maakond, Viisuküla

Viljandi County Sports and Recreation Centre, which is located in Holstre-Polli, boasts a number of well-tended forest tracks and trails which vary in length and intensity. There is a 2.5 km lit ski track which you can make use of day or night, regardless of the conditions - if there is a lack of natural snow, artificial snow is provided. The main building of the centre provides accommodation and is a great place to relax and unwind - including in its sauna. You can also hire cross-country skiing equipment, and ski instruction can be provided if arranged in advance. From spring to autumn the tracks and trails are ideal for hiking, running, Nordic walking, mountain biking, orienteering and simply enjoying the beauty of the natural environment.

Saku health and ski trails

Saku bog forest health and ski trails are a great place to spend time actively!You will find 2 km, 3.5 km, and 7 km hiking or skiing trails. There is also a 2.7 km illuminated trail. There are information boards with maps and signposts in the most important places of the trails. There is also a 3 km trail for hiking at the edge of the forest. The trail is open all year round and, in most cases, maintained even in the snowy period, so you can get to the forest without disturbing the skiers. Ski rental is also available on site.

The starting point of these tracks, which are 4 km from the centre of Võru, is at the ski centre at the Kubija Hotel. The tracks measure 2, 3 and 5 km and are lit until 20:00 from Monday to Friday.
