Experimentally exceptional

Want to be able to say that you partied in Estonia before everyone knew it was cool? Book a ticket to Tallinn Music Week, named one of The Guardian's top five winter music festivals. No time for a full festival? We recommend a show in Von Krahl, the avant-garde Tallinn theatre, bar and club attracting local art patrons and other colourful characters. In the student capital of Estonia, Tartu, check out Genialistide Club - a kaleidoscope of art, cinema, theatre and music. Once you're already in Tartu, combine the best of past and present with a jazz concert at the new Estonian National Museum, an ultra-modern building winning international awards.

Dance fever

If you love nothing more than thumping bass and dancing till the sun comes up, come take advantage of the Estonian winter, where the nights are longer! Immerse yourself in the high quality sound in Tallinn's Club Studio, which is divided into a mainstream hall and an al-ternative electro hub. At Club Vabank, in both Tallinn and Tartu, you won't have to commit to one musical style, and can hear everything from retro to R'n'B. If you're visiting the coastal town of Haapsalu, hit up one of Estonia's most legendary nightclubs - Club Africa, where temperatures rise in spite of the weather outside and the DJ plays only the best dance hits.

For the refined taste

The country that is home to Arvo Pärt, named the most performed living composer for the sixth time, clearly has lots to offer classical fans. In Estonia, classical music is not reserved for the elite – the prices are reasonable, concerts numerous, and the quality high. One of the seasonal highlights is MustonenFest, an international baroque festival in Tallinn that focuses on the interaction between Eastern and Western music cultures. For ballet and opera lovers, the repertoire of the is filled with world famous pearls like Carmen, The Nutcracker, and Aida. If you love classical, don't skip the classical music rave at Tallinn Music Week for a totally fresh experience.

Off the beaten path

Feeling daring and ready for an adventure? Check out the venues that are usually overlooked by tourists. In Kuressaare, the capital of Estonia's biggest island Saaremaa, you can be the dancing queen or king of the spacious dance floor at Club Diva, where DJs spin chart toppers all night long. Or get a taste of energetic Russian dance music at Club Avenue in Narva, Estonia's most eastern border town.

For those curious about Estonian folk music, head to the Estonian Traditional Music Centre in Viljandi, hometown of the Estonia's largest folk festival. Unique events there include a laying-concert (no dancing there, just laying down comfortably) and Tantsumaja – a traditional Estonian dance workshop. Don't miss the opportunity to make merry with the locals at these insider events!
