Sillamäe is located near the Gulf of Finland, on the estuary of Sõtke river. The industrial city was "born" in year 1946, when it was decided to establish a metallurgy plant there, that rehandles oil shale ore to get uranic oxide as an outcome. Due to this industry, the city was closed off for long time. Nowadays You have the possibility to examine distinctive buildings, classical parkways and museums from the age of Stalin. In Sillamäe You can see the most complete architectural composition of that age in Estonia.
Interesting to know: In the 19th century Sillamäe became a popular summer resort for its beautiful beach. Lots of Sankt-Petersburg intellectuals have spent their vacations in Sillamäe.
