Exhibition "Untamed"

The 1990s introduced the liberation of social life and a free-market economy, and both had a huge influence on Estonian culture. Artists challenged the norms of aesthetic expression and tested the limits of art. While in Estonia the 1990s were a time of youthful bravado, energy and new opportunities, in the 2000s the dashing ferocity of the previous decade started fading and most of the art life became more professional.

The exhibition doesn't attempt to offer an overview of all of Estonian art in the 1990s but focuses on certain artists and presents viewers with works from the collections of the Tartu Art Museum and the Art Museum of Estonia that have been neglected in recent decades. A y

A yearning for tenacious and unrefined art prompted the curators to find additional artists whose works are still untamed in one way or another.
